Squire
A graphic novel set in an alternate history of the Middle East/North Africa, Squire is an incredibly engaging read, with vivid characters and exquisite worldbuilding. The protagonist is a young girl seeking glory in her country's army, and the story follows her journey as she learns to question authority, to think for herself, and to accept her heritage in a country that is divided. The illustrations enhance the narrative exponentially, artfully weaving real historical elements into a vibrant fictitous world.
Who read to you as a child?
My whole family! Mum would be in charge of the longer bed-time stories; older books like Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, a whole array of classics. Dad would read younger books to me, like Dr. Suess’ Green Eggs and Ham (he still has the whole thing memorised)! My older brother Fred would read me his picture books, and explain the stories to me. He also had a much-beloved The Making of the Lord of the Rings book which he would read to me as we sat in a hammock overlooking Geordie Bay on Rottnest.
